This coming weekend provides us a significant moment to pause and reflect upon sacrifice. Memorial Day began as a time when our nation stopped to remember those who died in the service of our country, and it continues to offer that opportunity for us. In many ways, the day has a somber tone. Too many lives have been lost because of humanity’s selfish ambitions, and too many families have suffered loss due to wars. However, Memorial Day carries with it an inherent sense of encouragement and responsibility as well. We should be encouraged as we think of the heroic efforts of others who gave of their own lives for something greater than themselves. Indeed, they counted their own lives lost for the sake of freedom. And how we should embrace the responsibility of freedom we have inherited from their strife! Thanks to these men and women, you and I can worship, testify, and live freely! I encourage you to join with me this Monday, especially, as we honor those who paid the ultimate price for our liberty and as we recommit to the obligations freedom brings.
Of course, such a holiday always reminds me of the One who granted us spiritual freedom through His unique, ever-sufficient sacrifice. Jesus Christ came to earth, lived a sinless life, taught with authority, performed astonishing miracles, died on the cross, and rose the third day! He volunteered for this life-giving mission because He too was committed to a greater purpose . . . providing salvation to those who truly believed upon Him. What a Savior! What a hero! So, I challenge you to worship Him this weekend because He has done something that no other man or woman could do—He paid for your sins! Exalt His name and declare to others the saving message of Christ!
I so appreciate you as my Temple family. You consistently give honor to whom honor is due while magnifying our Lord and His deeds. Thank you for your commitment to making Christ known in your personal life and in your support for the Gospel. You are a remarkable people! And better yet, you are a loved people!
